WILL SMITH (AND SOME OTHERS) ARE HERE FOR YOU

Movies to turn bad days into good days and good days to even better days.

The Pursuit of Happyness (2006)

This movie is, without a doubt, life-changing. That's it. I have no more words. This post is over.

Okay, just kidding - of course I will nevER run out of words for this beautiful masterpiece. Imagine - a father and son tandem loiters around the city, broke and homeless, and just a year later, the father, in the form of THE MAGICAL WILL SMITH, lands a prestigious job despite having just one suit. It's the most effective pick-me-upper, as it shows you only need what you have right now to go beyond greatness. I mean, he attended the job interview after a night in prison for crying out loud. And you know what makes it all better? It's based on a true story. Yep, A TRUE STORY OF A REAL HUMAN BEING WITH JUST ONE SUIT BUT BECAME A MEGA SUCCESSFUL BROKER ANYWAY. Bad days can miss my determined, persevere, hopeful butt goodbye. (Watch the trailer here)

Almost Famous (2000)

A fifteen-year-old music fan gets given an assignment by Rolling Stone magazine, which leads him to go on tour with up and coming band Stillwater - I know, I thought this was such corny fanfic material at first too, but I COULDN'T BE MORE WRONG. I was so, so wrong and innocent and clueless and so easy to jump on dumb conclusions that I am sosososo ashamed to even admit that yes, I thought Almost Famous, the movie Almost Famous, the beautiful work of goddamn art Almost Famous, was - and I quote - corny fanfic material. I would like to apologize to Cameron Crowe, Kate Hudson, and everyone I might have offended. I know there are many of you.

But, fortunately, I know better now, and you should know better too - this movie is crazy inspiring, and just three hours of complete and utter satisfaction. It's full of turns, and it's so unpredictable and engaging. It's just unbelievable, and I actually feel so honored to be born on the same year as this movie. I don't know what the human race did to deserve such a treasure. (Watch the trailer here)

Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)

While Pretty In Pink killed - no, incinerated - the John Hughes enthusiast in me, this movie brought it back to life. This is definitely the best film Hughes has ever made, and - YES I'M SAYING IT I CAN'T BELIEVE MYSELF EITHER - I think it's even better than The Breakfast Club fight me. It's undeniably funny and so daring that I think Hughes just went full on yolo. It's also surprisingly profound, and at times I didn't know if I was crying because of laughter or because it was just so beautiful. The aesthetics were so satisfying, and the big random dance number? Like sunrise in a time of eternal darkness. Honestly, this is all you have to know about me - my hobbies? Ferris Bueller's Day Off. My sense of humor? Ferris Bueller's Day Off. My family history? Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and teenage Charlie Sheen's magical cameo.

Also!! If you're ever planning to watch Expelled, the movie with all the internet people in it, just watch this instead. It's basically the same thing, only better, but without Cameron Dallas. Expelled isn't really worth it, unless you're looking for an hour-and-a-half long montage of Cameron Dallas, then it's definitely worth it. (Watch the trailer here)

The Internship (2013)

Yes, this is the movie where Dylan O'Brien is a sassy tech geek with glasses, and you're welcome. This movie might have been just a huge advertisement for Google, but come on, two adults who can't even say 'online' beat young prodigies in getting a job at Google? How can you say no to that? It's so light and entertaining, and yeah okay a lot of people only watched it because Dylan was wearing glasses and beanies and was saying all these sarcastic comments that we rip our hair for, but it's still a treat for non-Dylan enthusiasts and tired, hopeless people alike. The sets were so colorful and the cast so energetic that it just knocks the lethargy out of you - trust me, I watched this on cable TV at 2 am after staying up studying to exams, and it's true. The Kings of Summer (2013)
Confirmed: the real reason why humanity is falling apart is because this movie is still so underrated. I mean, three boys run off to build their own house in the woods? And one of those boys is Nick Goddamn RobinsonSeriously if you haven't watched this what are you doing to yourself. It's indie and coming-of-age without that intimidating feel; it feels warm and familiar instead. The cinematography surprised me too - there were a lot of scenes where the protagonists were just goofing around in the woods, and usually I found those kind of things boring, but not the way Kings did it. It was such a feast for the eyes, even made better by the accompaniment of the perfect soundtrack.

Also, do not, do not, get me started on the gem that is Nick Robinson. There were a lot of footage of him kissing flowers and walking around, sunshine beaming on his smile, and man oh man am I not complaining. Another thing I like about this is that the cast are actual teenagers (one of which is Moises Arias aka Rico in Hannah Montana!! I lost my shit when I recognized him) and most of the goofing around scenes weren't scripted, just sheer, legit teenager-y playfulness. This totally exceeded my expectations and I've been reminded of how much I love this film that I might ditch homework and rewatch this after I finish this post. (Watch the trailer here) (I did and now my heart hurts I just love this movie so much)

Rushmore (1998)

Quite possibly the second most heartwarming film by my main man Wes Anderson (The Royal Tenenbaums is the first), Rushmore tells about Max Fischer's struggle to win the affections of a teacher, especially after she falls for his accomplice instead. Anderson's work is always unique and never disappoints - the plots are never just a straight line, and it gives your chest a huge embrace even though it's unfamiliar and something you haven't seen before. The protagonists are frustrating at times, because they're going to do such stupid, stupid things, but that's why I love it so much - it shows humans as they are: desperate and flawed. And despite of everything, Max still gets to dance with Rosemary Cross at the end, and it just goes to show that even people who majorly mess up gets their moment. I would watch the everloving shit out of this any day. (Little fact: when Bill Murray read the screenplay for this movie, he wanted to be in it so bad he offered to do it for free. Same Bill Murray same.) (Watch the trailer here)

The Way, Way Back (2013)

I cry everytime. No matter how many times I watch it. Even if I watch it in a row. I still cry. Duncan, played by believably awkward Liam James, says about ten words for the first half of the film, so when he smiles and laughs and dances on the other half, your heart will just give up. You will be in shambles, and the end will just leave you a mess. Everyone at the Water Wizz is so lovable, especially Lewis, the bald one with the mustache and glasses - my favorite - and undeniably funny Owen. Duncan is just impossible not to root for, and when he doessomethingthatIcan'tsay, it will break your heart. And you will cry. Some happy tears, but mostly tears tears. (Watch the trailer here)
